On January 6, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation. Mr. Trudeau has been the Liberal Party leader since 2013 and Canada’s prime minister since 2015.

He said his difficult but necessary decision was the right one for the nation’s future. He will step down on March 9 when the Liberals name his replacement.

Mr. Trudeau’s popularity has plummeted in recent months. An October poll showed that 44 percent of Canadians preferred the Conservative party led by Pierre Poilievre. Just 22 percent favoured the Liberals.
