Hurricane Helene hit the coast of Florida on September 26. The tempest was one of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the United States.

Rapid intensification

The storm began forming on September 23 over the Caribbean Sea. As it moved toward the Gulf of Mexico, the weather system became a tropical storm. When it reached western Cuba, it caused floods and mudslides.
