In August, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency for mpox. It’s the second time in two years that the international health agency has done so.

Why is mpox such a big concern? The virus is racing through Africa, especially in children. And the region doesn’t have enough vaccines to stop it.

Mpox is contagious

How do people catch mpox? Through close contact with someone who is infected. Contaminated objects like clothing can also spread the virus. So can bites or scratches from infected animals.
