The Summer Olympic Games open in Paris on July 26. France has hosted the Olympic Games five times before. It’s the third time Paris has taken up the torch.

Firsts and foremost

A lot has changed since 1900, when the City of Lights first held the Games. Back then, there were only 26 teams, 95 events, and 997 athletes – only 22 of which were women. It was the first time female athletes participated in the modern-day Olympics, which had debuted four years earlier in Athens, Greece.
