Move over, Raptors. The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is coming to Toronto! It will be the first WNBA team in Canada.

The 12-team league was founded in 1996. A 13th franchise was awarded to San Francisco last year. That team – Golden State – will tip off for the first time in 2025. Toronto is expected to hit the court in May 2026.

A matter of time

“There’s no question in my mind this will succeed,” says WNBA veteran and captain of the Canadian Women’s National Team Natalie Achonwa.
